Acupuncture for Fertility Health

Footsteps on sand
What does this mean exactly?  Read below for more info about how we can support you on your journey.

The ABORM Board certifies acupuncturists who specialize in the treatment of male and female infertility via a rigorous certification examination that measures their knowledge base in Western REI (reproductive endocrinology and infertility) and TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) as it relates to infertility.  ABORM Fellows are experienced, highly trained, certified, and up-to-date on the very latest in evidence-based CAM (Chinese Acupuncture + Moxibustion) treatments for infertility.  They can be an invaluable resource on your fertility journey.

The use of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for fertility benefits is by no means a new approach.  There are written records demonstrating the use of TCM with infertility for over 2000 years. Acupuncture and TCM is beneficial for all stages of the fertility journey, before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and postpartum. TCM has also been integrated for the past 75 years into Chinese hospitals (where Western Medicine is commonly practiced) to aid in the benefit of fertility for both males and females.

Acupuncture and ART (assisted reproductive technology) can help in many ways including:

* Increases blood profusion to the uterus

* Reduces ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside the uterus) rates

* Reduces miscarriage rates

* Reduces stress levels

* Reduces the level of inflammatory cytokines

* Relaxes spasms

* Increases live births

In one well known study, Manehimer, et al. (2008) performed a Meta-Analysis and concluded acupuncture increased the odds ratio of clinical pregnancy rates by 65% and increased the odds ratio for live birth by 91%.

In another study by Paulus et al., (2002) acupuncture pre and post IVF transfer increased the rate of success on an average of about 40-50%.

Using TCM and an integrated approach, we can support both men and women through the use of Chinese herbs and acupuncture to help bring the body into balance and promote optimal fertility and/or work with your Western reproductive endocrinologist to support your IUI or IVF cycle.  Since no person is exactly alike, the pathway to your approach to optimal fertility will also be unique.
